About

OUR

MISSION

TAPTHESCREEN™ was created as a platform for tap dancers to showcase their abilities during a time where they are unable to physically perform or compete in person. It is a dance competition that operates completely online, committed to allowing young tap dance artists to continue to perform and grow during social distancing. As many people are still practicing safety by staying away from the competition scene, we wanted to create another year of a platform for tap dancers to perform! We are striving to provide education, inspiration, and fun for the students in our dance community that are without their normal dance classes or performance opportunities. TAPTHESCREEN™ is a competition that is set to motivate dancers to continue moving, learning and performing. We want to provide a virtual space for dancers to showcase the solos they have worked so hard on. We hope that you find joy in this experience. We believe by switching a competition to an online platform, the students will still gain the same performance experience and education that they otherwise would have received attending an in-person event!

Our adjudication and judging panel is compiled of highly respected, working professional rhythm tap dancers from New York City and Los Angeles. Our artists are eager to provide young tap dancers with feedback and professional guidance. The judges will receive all submissions via a private viewing platform where they will give feedback and adjudicate each piece. We aim for the highest level of integrity and will provide each performer with fair, reasonable scoring, with a priority in education. We encourage each dancer to treat their filming like an actual performance. Warm up, wear full makeup and costume, etc. Simulate a performance to the best of your ability.

ABOUT OUR FOUNDER:

Emily Lowrey is a tap dancer from Tilton, NH. Growing up in the world of dance competition as a child through her teen years, she was honored enough to receive Dancer of the Year on multiple occasions. Emily continues to teach private choreography for young dancers in the New England area. Aside from teaching dance, Emily has been a store manager for a B-Corp certified company and helped mentor her young employees professionally.

With the disruption of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak and the imposed social distancing rules, Emily found herself unable to fulfill her day job or teach dance. As dance competitions cancelled at an unprecedented rate and many young dancers were left with no place to showcase their solos, Emily had an epiphany to create the world’s first online tap dance competition called

TAP THE SCREEN™. By creating this competition, Emily wants to provide a virtual outlet for young dancers to have an opportunity to showcase their hard work while staying inside during the quarantine. She hopes that this will provide an escape for many people who are feeling discouraged about their art during this time. Emily’s biggest takeaway for you is that “It does not matter where you perform, as long as you take pride and passion in sharing your art!”
